The musical public are respectfully informed that the SECOND SOUTH YORKSHIRE BRASS BAND CONTEST will take place (by the kind permission of Mr Wm. Eyre) in NETHER HALL PARK, on Monday the 25th day of June, 1860, under the immediate patronage of

The Prizes to be awarded on this occasion will amount in value to nearly FIFTY POUNDS ! including two superb SILVER CUPS ! the Gift of the Inhabitants of Doncaster and the Doncaster Licensed Victuallers Association.

- Baildon Band, winner of £50 in a Match with the Dewsbury Band, 1859

- Black Dike Mills Band, winner of the First Prize at York, and Second Prize at Hull, 1859

- Morley Band, winner of the First Prize at Hull, 1857 and 1858, and Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1859
- Holmfirth Temperance Band, winner of the First Prize at Aston Park, Birmingham, 1859

The Contest will commence at Two o'clock. Each band will play Two Pieces of their own selection. After the bands have played their first pieces, the whole will be united and form a MONSTER BRASS BAND of upwards of THREE HUNDRED and FORTY MUSICIANS ! and will play Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" and Mendelssohn's "Wedding March". At the close of the contest there will be a
GRAND FETE CHAMPETRE !
Assault at Arms - Comprising Feats of Swordsmanship, Bayonet Exercise, by Professor Gregory of Savile House, Leicester Square, London, and Assistants, also the celebrated Indian Club Exercise, as performed before Her Majesty the Queen.
RIFLE PRACTICE ! ARCHERY ! AND DANCING !
The whole to conclude with a Brilliant DISPLAY of FIREWORKS, at dusk. Amongst other numerous and Original Devices introduced will be:

Cheap Excursion Trains from Boston, Horncastle, Lincoln, Peterboro', Nottingham, Grantham, Newark, Retford, Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield, Pontefract, Sheffield, Masbro', Barnsley, Keadby Grange Bridge, Thorne, and all the intermediate Stations
ADMISSION:- Tickets purchased on or before 23rd of June for the whole day's Entertainment, SIXPENCE each. On the day of the Contest, ONE SHILLING each.
Excursionists on producing their Railway Tickets will be admitted at Sixpence each. A limited number of Tickets for the Grand Rehearsal in the Market Hall will be issued 6d. each. Tickets may be had of all the Book and Music Sellers, and at the usual places. Agents have also been appointed in all the surrounding Villages.
Dewsbury Band won the contest, with Cleckheaton Band second.
The first South Yorkshire Brass Band Contest was held on 29 August 1859 in "Mr King's Grounds", adjoining the Horse Fair (now Waterdale) near Doncaster town centre. Attended by over 4000 people and with prize money of £25 and a silver cup, it was won by the Cleckheaton Band playing a medley from Verdi's "La Traviata". Other bands competing were Doncaster Railway Foundry Band, Gawthorpe Band, Hemsworth Band, Meltham Mills Band, Mirfield Band, Ossett Temperance Band, Thorncliffe Victoria Band, Dodworth Band and Conisborough Band (conducted by Mr Thickett). In addition the Doncaster Victoria Band, Boulton Band and Brodsworth Band played in a non-competitive capacity. The adjudicators were Henry Farmer, H Newham, Thomas Dodgson and Enderby Jackson.
