Edward Hales

Edward Hales was born at Derby in 1870. He received his primary instruction in music from his grandfather, who was for many years a member of the Derbyshire Yeomanry Band. At the age of 15 he joined the Derby United Band as principal flugel horn, and made very rapid strides. Mr. A.R. Seddon was then the conductor, and took a lively interest in young “Ted”, and gave him great encouragement.

After 2 years he turned his attention to the cornet and was very successful on this instrument. He has composed several pieces for brass bands, which are published in various journals, during which time he was solo cornet for Derby Sax Tuba Band (the conductor of which is his brother, Mr. W.G. Hales). He is earnest in his work, diligent in his studies, and thoroughly hard working; understands theory and composition, and is, generally speaking, a good all-round musician.
