Gavin Holman lives in North Yorkshire, England. A tuba player, he has had a lifelong interest in brass bands, and that has expanded into an internationally acclaimed website and numerous publications.

His specialty over the last 30 years has been researching vintage brass bands from the early 1800s to the mid-1900s. Of the many brass bands that have flourished across the world over the last 200 years, very few have documentation covering their history. Information on their formation, histories, pictures, contesting, memorabilia, recordings, publications etc. has been made available for all to access via the IBEW archive.

Gavin has written some 200 articles, accessible via his website, or perhaps more directly at https://gavinholman.academia.edu/research, together with 130 blog posts on the history of brass bands and associated topics.

With an academic background of computer science and librarianship, Gavin was responsible for developing the first major in-house online systems for the British Library, and completed his professional career there as head of the British Library IT Infrastructure, including its many digital archives.
